Dear Bill, here is the necessary information...
(sorry it took me a bit!)
Old style deployant clasp:
The older (or single fold) deployant clasp does not necessitate a loop at all, as the longer side of the strap folds under the clasp. Note that it requires a special strap. Some aftermarket straps though have one loop, which is completely without function (second pic):

New style deployant clasp:
The new (or butterfly, double fold) deployant clasp, which slowly will replace the old one, can be attached to the standard tang buckle strap. Thus, the strap will have two loops:
