Does it bother you that Blancpain has no 'instant classic' yet?
Dear All:
if you follow the multiple watch discussions on the internet regarding a choice for a certain watch or at least brand, the term history is often used.
Now, for me history has not that much to do with experience (which in today's even changing technical environment has a different importance than decades before), but more with brand recognition. One aspect of brand recognition is the elusive instant classic, a watch (or a collection) which is widely known (even in the general public). Examples are the Rolex Submariner, the Patek Calatrava, etc.
Such classics may have different functions, they help foster resale value, brand image (and this the wearer's image), and they even might help to shift the owner's self-esteem. But they can also be a liability in case a company's economic success depends highly on such.
Now, Blancpain does not (yet) have such a watch. True, the shape of the Blancpain case is recognisable, and the vintage 50 Fathoms is a collector's item - but so far only to the (relatively few) people in the know.
I would like to discuss with you, whether this bothers you, whether you are indifferent on this, or whether you consider this even as an asset.
Cheers,
Magnus
