It could be...

that if a piece of lubricant debris blocks the gears, that I expect this to have distinct effect - hence 'sudden' and not evolving over time.

As for the winding boxes: I have no personal experience with them, but I do not see a problem. Your husband seems to be quite happy with them. I would also not expect too much wear of the winding mechanism. Watch winders, at least the programmable ones like Orbita, keep the winding state of a watch but do not increase it.

Finally, you raise an important question about international shipping. I would advise you to have your Blancpain dealer or Blancpain US take care of that. This way, you can be assured that the watch is properly packed, insured and all customs & other formalities (think: CITES!!!) are properly taken care off without any hassles from your side.
