BLANCPAIN NEWS: Blancpain presents the Only Watch 2009, a unique 500 Fathoms donated for a good cause!
Dear All:
it has been a long tradition for Blancpain to support the cause of the fight against a malignant disease, the Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy (DMD). DMD is a rare genetic illness affecting 1 in 3500 children. It is a severely degenerating disease, characterised by a progressive weakening of muscles and leading to pulmonary and cardiac complications that can, in adult life, jeopardise the functioning of vital organs. Children affected by DMD are increasingly dependent on an environment requiring constant help and adapted treatments.
In this context, the Association Monégasque contre les Myopathies - (Monegasque Association against Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy, see below) has teamed up with the organisers of annual Monaco Yacht Show and Patrizzi & Co Auctioneers to held a charity auction of unique watches donated by renowned watch manufacturers.

This year, Blancpain has created a special (and unique!) version of the 500 Fathoms, the Ref. 50015-12B30-52B 'Only Watch 2009', a 48mm ultra-sports watch, water resistant up to 1000m - and this although the watch carries a display back! The watch features a brushed titanium case measuring 48 mm in diameter, equipped with a crown guard. Placed inside the case at 10 o’clock, a self-winding decompression valve guarantees the security and the reliability of the watch, without requiring any handling on the part of the wearer.
The watch also features the signature domed sapphire bezel.

The dial is constructed with three elements. The central part is in carbon fiber, on the outer ring of the dial, which is circular brushed, is the calendar disc below a blued sapphire crystal insert with single aperture at 6 o’clock that displays the date in white numerals on a black disc. The sword hands are luminous at the center and the extra long seconds hand is also luminous and has a red finial point. The hours are indicated by luminous squares and at 12 o’clock by an inverted luminous triangle shape.
The 500 Fathoms is powered by the self-winding Calibre 1315, specifically designed to equip sports watches. It incorporates a glucydur balance with micrometric regulating screws, which helps to prevent any jarring from disturbing the smooth running of the watch. Three series-coupled barrels guarantee constant energy and a five-day power reserve.
Interviewed, by the organisers of the Only Watch Auction, Blancpain's President Marc A. Hayek said " “It is all in the details. This is why we chose the 500 Fathoms for Only Watch – on one side it expresses our expertise in diving watches and on the other the lifestyle aspect. Based on one of our historic watches – the Fifty Fathoms – this watch is very much in the spirit of the brand. A watch linked with everything that is connected with the ocean: with boats, yachts, the spirit of adventure, sport, and developed from extreme new materials. It is very much a lifestyle watch.”
This watch is a piece unique which will be auctioned off on 24 September 2009 in Monaco!
Previews will take place in:
- London (Asprey): 3 to 5 September 2009
- New York (Torneau TimeMachine): 10 to 12 September 2009
- Milan (Pisa Orologeria): 17 to 18 September 2009
- Monaco (Monaco Yacht Show): 23 to 24 September 2009

About the Association Monégasque contre les Myopathies and the Only Watch Auction:
The goal of the Association Monégasque contre les Myopathies - AMM (Monegasque Association against Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy) is to sensitise the public to favour the integration of children with DMD, to promote and encourage scientific and medical research to find therapies and to collect funds to finance research and provide children
with a better quality of life.
Since 2001, the Monaco Yacht Show has supported AMM in its fight to give these children a chance to live through to adulthood. Every year, the Monaco Yacht Show donates 50% per entrance proceeds – 52 500 € in 2006 – and helps AMM to set up charity events such as the Only Watch 09
auction.
Thanks to the generosity and hard work of people such as the participants and sponsors of Only Watch and in particular Luc Pattavino (founder of the Monagasque Association against Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy (AMM) and the driving force behind Only Watch), and Osvaldo Patrizzi, and Patrizzi & Co (the organizers of the auction event), great progress is being made in research into Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy and the genes which cause the disease. In 2008 alone, 15 research teams were supported at a cost of around €1.7 million!
